Customer Reviews

Excellent product5
Quiet as advertised and superior in design to the traditional fan. The 21st Century-looking style and the fact that it takes up little horizontal space are big pluses. Highly recommend.

Good desk fan for a cubicle4
I bought this fan for my cubicle desk area since the office airflow isn't all that great and sitting around a pc and monitor all day certainly keeps the air warm. This fan is small, light, and very easy to carry around. It fit nicely into a backpack to carry to the office. I was worried that the small airflow opening wouldn't provide a good air circulation but I was proven wrong when I turned it on. The max setting is relatively whisper quiet which is nice for the office area. Sitting within 1 to 5 feet of the unit you'd get a pretty good airflow (on medium or max setting). It's meant to be a desk fan so I wouldn't recommend this if you've got a large office and sitting far away from it. Plus, I don't think I'd need anything more powerful than this, otherwise you're just blowing papers around your desk. The ocillation and timer features are nice though I haven't had the need to use them often. Buttons on the top of the fan, easy and strightforward to use. Overall, a good value fan for the office.

I like it - wall mountable, quiet on low

This is a nice fan. I mounted it on the wall. It is fairly quiet on low speed.

Super Small Fan

Great little fan. Moves a lot of air for it's size. BUT!!! ...it will only wall-mount in one direction without the tip-over switch shutting itself off. We use it in a motorhome, and wall mounting would make this fan work much better for us. Well worth the money as a table fan anyway.

Son's review

My son says this is a good fan but is a little underpowered. It is mounted to blow on him on the upper bunk.

Ticking Timer

The Soleus FTY-25 is a quiet fan with a noisy timer.

We use fans at night to create a soft breath of air as we go to sleep. For this purpose, "quiet" is good. We live in the country and the natural sounds are pleasant and actually reassuring. "White noise" is unneeded.

Except for the timer, the Soleus is a good, quiet solution. The timer makes a fast ticking noise like some older kitchen timers.

A complete explanation of the Soleus controls and operation is surprisingly wordy. I'll try to cut it short...

The timer is mechanical. Once the timer dial is turned, the mechanism will tick for the maximum period that it was turned to, even if turned off in the meantime. In other words, if the dial is moved to the 2 hours position and then immediately moved back to "off" (even unplugged), then when the fan is turned back on the next day (even to just the untimed "on" position), it is going to tick for 2 hours.

The Soleus can be made to operate quietly. Just never move the timer dial to a timed-setting position.

Since we don't care about a timer when we are awake and can't use it to go to sleep, we taped the timer to the "on" position. With the timer dial in the "on" position, the fan can be turned off and on with the Fan Speed Switch, which has an "off" position, or with a quiet external electronic timer.

For those who want a smallish fan that moves a lot of air, the Vornado 550B moves more air. Unfortunately, the 550B has a variable speed controller that hums like an old fluorescent light, which makes it unacceptable to those who want a truly quiet low-speed fan.

wall fan

We were looking for a fan for a low ceiling and a previous manufacturer of low ceiling fans was out of business. During a visit to my doctor, I noticed he had this fan in all of his examining rooms. We now have several of these fans in our sun room, hanging on the wall at the junction of the ceiling. They are perfect for quietly moving air in small spaces.

Great Little Fan

Bought this to use in connection with our treadmill. Like the controls being in the front as we have it on a high shelf. Working out very well and so are we! Help other customers find the most helpful revi

Exactly what I needed

When I purchased this fan I wanted something that was appealing to the eye as well as small and quiet. I have this placed in my window seal in the bedroom to blow in cool air. I would have to say that this is all of the above. The only complaints that I would give it is when I have the fan tilted a certain way it stops working. I think there must be a short in the wiring.

Works great - looks nice and is quite!

I received a different color than the silver/blue as pictured. Mine surprisingly arrived in taupe/black that apprears to be metalic-looking which I actually preferred.

Not much to comment about - The fan runs quietly, being relatively small-sized and the convenient timer shuts off the power in 30-min increments for up to two hours.

For under $20 and free shipping, it was a great deal! Thanks, Amazon.

Good Fan but can be better

This is a good small fan. It is relatively quiet but it is not very powerful. If you want a strong fan, this may not be the one for you.

I am using this as wall fan. It is able to be adjusted from left to right but cannot be adjusted up and down. For my situation, it is pointing too much down. I wish it can also be adjusted up and down.

Because I am using it as wall fan, it is very inconvenient to switch on/off the fan using either switch on the fan. Both switches are at the top of the fan when wall mounted. I plan to add an in-line switch to it or I can plug it into a switched outlet.

Also the cord that came with the fan is not quite long enough for me to hang the fan high up on the wall. I need to add a short extension cord to it.

Neat fan

This fan is neat with the timer feature. I set it in the bathroom on the timer and it drys my wet towels and shower fast when I'm at work so mildew is decreased.
It is not extremely strong, but it is quiet and the circulation works good. If you are looking for a good strong fan, I suggest the Honeywell HT800 Super Turbo High Performance Fan, but it is loud.
But this fan is great for sleep, office, or any livingrooms and the options are all great. Also if it tips over it shuts off.
Everything works fine. The timer is silent, and it is great.

Quiet, compact and powerful

We have this fan wall mounted in our hallway to push the warmth from the pellet stove in our dining room down to the bedrooms at the end of the corridor. The fan does an effective job. It's got very quiet operation, and with the rotating oscillator built into the face of the fan, it can be positioned without having to account for the swing of a typical oscillating fan - it's head does not have to swing; the grill rotates instead and directs the air in varying directions.

In my opinion, there are two minor draw backs, though they certainly shouldn't stop anyone from buying this product. Firstly, the rubber feet could be softer to help isolate any vibration/resonance where it's mounted. Secondly, it would be good if the on/off switch was separated from the timer; when the unit's wall mounted high, you can't see the switch's labels, so you have to guess whether you're turning it on or putting it on timer.

Oscillate?? no, blow.. YES

When one sees a picture of a fan on a pivot described as "oscillating" one expects it to wave the fan across the pivot axis. This doesn't do that.. being afraid my English was fading in my old age, I actually looked up "oscillating" in the dictionary.. clearly it is a repeated back and forth waving motion..

What this fan does is, via a gearing mechanism, rotate the front grill. The grill is fashioned to generate a "butterfly pattern" of air .. rotating it causes a rotation of this air causing a variation of airflow over the area generally where the fan is directed.. I guess to a degree this is a similar effect, but it doesn't oscillate!! :)

The fan is pretty compact and generates a flow of air that is remarkably quiet, even on the highest speed.

The timer function works ok (though its not intuitive and the directions are ambiguous) To make it work, one must 1. turn ON the fan to one of its 3 speeds (there appears to be 6 speeds, but the dial rotates through what appears to be the same OFF-1-2-3 with each 180 degree sweep. 2. turn the TIMER dial CLOCKWISE (not counterclockwise as the directions say) to a time setting of 30, 60, or 90 minutes.. AND LEAVE IT THERE.. it would seem one should "wind it up" to the desired time, then turn it to "on".. this doesn't work.. :).. if you leave it on a time (or a spot in between.. the directions suggest it is only 3 times, but it seems to be analog to any spot in between) Then the fan will turn OFF after the time dialed up.. even if you "wound it up" to a higher time.. odd that.. :) My unit does emmit a TINY ticking sound, but nothing like some reviewers suggest.. its VERY quiet.

In order to NOT time it, you set the timer to ON! (I know, weird.. just do it! haha) and the speed dial to whatever speed you like.. it stays on forever.

The "oscillation" (yes its actually labeled that.. hehe) is a seperate switch. It engages electric rotation of the front grill.

The unit does seem to have a safety "turnover switch" to turn off the fan if it is kicked or knocked over.. I'd think this would require one to be careful in mounting it, but I didn't try it since I don't have it wall mounted. If you hold it in your hand while trying to figure out the controls it may not come on anyways.. it is off from the mercury switch (or whatever it is)

The "180 degree sweep" it suggests is true, but it is in an odd plane, niether up-down nor left-right.. but at 45 degrees.. so when you move it, you almost always have to also move the base to get the air direction you want.. takes a bit of getting used to. Also if you elevate the fan (other than "wall mount") it cannot be made to point airflow "down" relative to its feet.. So sitting it on a shelf or whatever above you isn't a good idea (unless you break or file off the "stop-tab" as another reviewer suggested). I expect the tab is there to prevent TWISTING and BREAKING of the wire leading into the fan, so if you remove it you will have to exercise care.

There is also no handle.. I know its a small fan, but it seems I'm always having to fiddle with it.. maybe only because I'm still learning.. and its awkward to pick up as there is really no convenient place to grip it.

I can't speak to its durability as of yet.. I've only had it about a week, but it seems as well-made as one can expect a $20 fan to be and its attractive in its own odd way.. hardly beautiful, but somehow appealling.

It is efficient if you care about those things.. it uses a max of 40 watts which is pretty good.. I note that the 20" Lasko uses 170 watts (odd.. my old one uses 90 watts.. but that's another story)

I think this fan is a pretty good value (barring the unlucky prospect of it failing). The $15-20 "box fans" which can be picked up at almost any grocery store or "mega-store" (if you get it shipped the value element goes out the window).. Lasko being probably the most common brand in the USA may be a better value if you just want air movement, but this one has it's own functional niche.

I recommend it for what it is... an economical, flexible alternative to swealtering in still air. I am giving it a 4 instead of a 5 star because other reviewers seem to indicate it may have a reliability issue. I will post an update if I have any problems develop.

quiet and powerful, but doesn't oscillate

since this is a fan we're using for a nightstand, we don't really care that it doesn't oscillate, but some people might. we have not had problems with the timer being loud, and it provides a good amount of air flow without being noisy. the only other drawback is that it tilts slightly up on a flat surface, so my husband is putting things under it at an angle so it will tilt down.

super quiet

Super quiet, just what I was looking for. Quiet for running at night, but more power at the higher speeds when/if you need it.

BUT, after just 2 weeks of use, the motor apparently burned up --- I had it on the lowest speed, and came into the room to a noticeable plastic-electrical smell, and the blade was barely turning. I will be returning it under warranty for another one, because i do like it.

The timer noise on the one i had was not at all noticeable like the other reviewer complains about.

The only thing i would add is a built in handle, but overall i like it.
